‘Christmas Wintry’ Florals

IMG_3991.jpg

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas! This year has been filled with many beautiful experiences and it has been an honor to share them with you. In true Sartorial Host fashion, I had to share this ethereal winter mix of florals to celebrate the occasion. For those that are clamoring for a red and green palette deviation, this is the floral mix for you. I wanted to design an arrangement that evokes the softness of winter’s first snow. Soft blooms of white lisianthus and cream roses complement a subtle blend of mauve and lavender tones to complete this winter beauty. This arrangement is like the embodiment of walking into a magical, snowy Narnia and I hope it brings you as much joy as it does me.

‘Christmas Wintry’

FLORALS + SUPPLIES

  • Footed vase, polished nickel (6-7” opening)

  • 1” mesh chicken wire

  • Floral snips

  • Floral tape

  • Floral water tube

  • 3-4 branches of fresh western cedar

  • 3-4 branches of fresh white pine

  • 1/2 bunch of willow feather eucalyptus

  • 1/2 bunch of eucalyptus pods

  • 1/2 bunch of privet berries

  • 6 stems of ‘Amnesia’ lavender roses

  • 8 stems of ‘Vendela’ cream roses

  • 1 bunch of white lisianthus

  • 2 stems of white dendrobium orchids

  • 1 stem of ‘Crane Feather King White’ kale flower

STEPS

  1. Fill the vessel with water so that all stems placed into the vessel will be able to hydrate.

  2. Snip a 8” x 8” section of chicken wire and mold the wire to create a structural shape that fits into the opening of the vase. This will allow your stems to be placed further away from the base of the arrangement to create placement flexibility.

  3. Start with your cedar and pine branches to create a greenery base for your arrangement. I like to use the white pine stems with a more sculptural shape to create the width of these arrangement. They are a sturdier branch than the western cedar and will create an interesting drape. The cedar branches are a tender stem and will create a fuller shape when arrangement closer in to the base.

  4. Arrange the vendela cream roses creating a few groupings around the vase. Opening up the petals will create a fuller bloom and will provide more coverage to hide the chicken wire structure underneath. Place a few of the white cream roses further away from the vase to add dimension.

  5. Layer in the willow feather eucalyptus.

  6. Arrange the lavender roses in focal points to create a soft touch of color among the white cream roses. One or two stems of the lavender roses should be set further out from the arrangement to add a bit of architectural interest.

  7. Add the privet berries and eucalyptus pods to add a woodsy texture.

  8. Fill in any gaps using the white lisianthus. Stagger a few stems of lisianthus with buds further away from the vase to add a wildness to the arrangement.

  9. Place the feature ‘king white’ kale flower in a high profile spot in the arrangement.

  10. Take the water tubes and fill them with water. Push the stems of the dendrobium orchids into the tube. Using the water tubes will ensure the orchids stay hydrated and give you flexibility to arrange the orchids further out so they don’t get lost in the bulk of the arrangement. Arrange the orchids.

  11. Top off the footed vessel after the arrangement is in place. Winter greens like the cedar and white pine tend to drink water quickly after a fresh cut.

  12. For the finishing touch, spritz the arrangement with water to help hydrate the petals.
