'Earthen Bounty' Florals

IMG_9947.jpg

This ‘Earthen Bounty’ floral arrangement was inspired by the terracotta vessel that I found at a local vintage shop. I love the textural, raw clay finish of the terracotta, and I let that tonality influence the over arching color palette of this arrangement. A little trick of the trade, because this vessel is porous and will not hold water, I use an internal glass vase that fits within the mouth of the pot to keep the stems hydrated.

Neutral tones of off white, blush, and toffee petals fill this arrangement. A bit of drama with the ti leaves and the black-blue viburnum berries give it some balance and sculptural bleached fern leaves, macrocarpa and persimmon branches for the perfect finish. The bleached fern leaves will last beyond this arrangement and can be repurposed in the same vessel. There’s something about the natural light and how it casts the most interesting shadows.

FLORALS + SUPPLIES

  • Medium to large terracotta vessel with a 6-8” opening

  • Cylinder glass vase that fits within the terracotta vessel

  • Green floral wire

  • 18 stems quick sand cream roses

  • 12 stems toffee garden roses

  • 12 stems terracotta caramel antique carnations

  • 3 green lotus persimmon branches

  • 3 stems ti leaves, black magic

  • 5 stems bleached flat fern

  • 1 bunch of viburnum berries

  • 2 stems macrocarpa eucalyptus

  • 1 bunch foxtail millets grass

  • 1 bunch rombifoglia pittosporum

STEPS

  1. Using the chicken wire, create a structure that sits above the terracotta vessel and also secures the internal glass vase from shifting.

  2. Start with the viburnum and pittosporum to create a full greenery base. The shape of the berries and branches will help drive the final arrangement shape.

  3. Layer in the quick sand cream and toffee roses. I like to reflex the petals of some of the quick sand cream roses to give it a fuller bloom. Arrange the roses with a few tighter in and a few reaching out to create depth and interest.

  4. Arrange the two large macrocarpa eucalyptus to help solidify the shape of the arrangement.

  5. For additional texture and depth, layer in the ti leaves and the millets grass.

  6. Finally, arrange the bleached flat fern and the persimmons as focal areas of the arrangement and to fill any gaps.

  7. Fill the inner vase with water and spritz the arrangement with water to hydrate the petals.
