'Marfa Maximalism' Florals

IMG_0591.jpg

Good morning from Marfa, Texas! I decided to take a last minute trip to visit a friend and was inspired to create this floral arrangement. I love the juxtaposition of Marfa’s inherent minimalism with the collective scale of lime-green anthurium and lemonade roses. In itself, the maxed out blooms in its contained state reinforces the minimalist nature of Marfa and its surrounding. I wanted to complete this piece at first light and enjoy the sunrise as this sculptural arrangement formed with the day. I was standing outside along a wire fence arranging this from the back of my car and as luck would have it, a maintenance guy showed up and offered to let me onto the ranch to capture a few close-ups amongst the cows. Classic Marfa.

‘Marfa Maximalism’ FLORALS

FLORALS + SUPPLIES

  • 1 medium to large vessel

  • 1” mesh chicken wire

  • 3 large stems of bromeliad blooms

  • 15 stems of lime green anthurium

  • 1 bunch of blue thistle

  • 12 stems of green lemonade roses

  • 8 stems of gerbera spider purple springs

STEPS

  1. Using the chicken wire, create a small mesh structure and insert it into the opening of the vase.

  2. Begin with the bromeliad stems on one side of the arrangement. Stagger the stems to create a bit of depth and interest.

  3. Next layer in the blue thistle to create a base of texture.

  4. Arrange the anthurium in a cascade down the middle and a few stems reaching out on the right side.

  5. Layer in the lemonade roses, not reflexed, amongst the anthurium. I like to keep the majority of the roses in it’s smaller ball form because it retains the same lime green tonality as the anthurium. I want the anthurium in it’s collective scale to be the most impactful, and the lime-green tones of the lemonade roses help reinforce that perspective.

  6. Reflex 2-3 lemonade roses to create a showy white bloom and arrange them to the right of the anthurium. One being the focal rose, and the others tucked back for depth.

  7. Finally, arrange the spider purple springs so that it dots the outer right edge of the arrangement.
