'Shades of Purple' Florals

IMG_8278.jpg

As lilac season comes to end, I wanted to create this arrangement as an ode to their beauty by incorporating all the shades of purple, lilac, and lavender. Even the cream-mauvish tones of the quick sand cream roses pull in a hint of purple sitting next to the vibrant variegated hydrangeas and lilac branches. I love that this arrangement feels like a celebration, which it is! Thankful for another season of super fragrant lilacs and full purple-headed blooms. In addition to the lilac, they purple hyacinth and cream roses are also sweet and fragrant. Altogether, it packs a punch in beauty and in scent. Delicate white flowers dot the arrangement as leafy branches and stems add a foraged natural look to the arrangement. If you look closely, you can spot little reveals of the green ball dianthus. I love using this varietal that comes from the carnation family because of it’s mossy-green texture and long shelf life. It’s also a great way to fill in any holes you may find in the arrangement. Cheers to a beautiful lilac season and looking forward to the next year!

FLORALS + SUPPLIES

  • 1 compote vessel or footed urn (8” opening)

  • Floral snips

  • Clear floral tape

  • 1” mesh chicken wire

  • 5 variegated purple hydrangeas

  • 8 stems of quick sand cream roses

  • 1 ‘Schubertii’ firework allium

  • 5 stems of purple lilac branches

  • 3 stems of lavender tulips

  • 5 stems of purple hyacinth

  • 5 stems of green ball dianthus

  • 2 stems of white branching spirea

  • 5 stems of white allium spray

  • 3 stems of white branching viburnum

STEPS

  1. Using the chicken wire, create a cage-like structure for the base of the arrangement and secure to the vessel using floral tape.

  2. Fill the vessel with water so all stems have access to water.

  3. Begin with the large heads of hydrangea to create a base to the arrangement and to hide a portion of the chicken wire. I like to group a few together and then a few random ones spread out.

  4. Then layer in a few of the quick sand cream roses closer to the base. I like to open the layers of the petals to create a large bloom that will help fill the arrangement quickly.

  5. Arrange the white allium spray and the green ball dianthus closer to the base of the arrangement to fill in any holes. The white allium spray tends to have a shorter stem, so it works well to add a bit of texture and softness near the base.

  6. Arrange the branching spirea and viburnum to add shape and texture.

  7. Layer in the lilac branches and hyacinth to add more pops of purple throughout.

  8. For impact, I then use a few statement quick sand cream roses, lavender tulips, and the ‘Schubertii’ firework allium to create movement and shape to the arrangement.

  9. Top off the arrangement with water and give the petals a quick mist to hydrate.
