'Summer Citrine' Florals

IMG_0190.jpg

This Texas summer has been a scorcher and I felt it only appropriate to pay ode by creating this fiery, vibrant floral arrangement. It all started with a beautiful mid-century walnut ice bucket I found at an antique store. Water tight and proportionally tall, this column vessel lends itself to a striking and grand arrangement. The vision behind the color composition was to create a blend of all things orange. I knew I wanted to incorporate fresh oranges to add dimensionality with its citrus fragrance and perfectly round shape. Golden yellow dahlias and orange amaranthus rounds out this symphony of orange. The orange pin cushions and ‘nina’ roses are just the cherry on top of this showstopper floral arrangement. I’m back in my hometown for the week and I had the joy of sharing this sculptural piece with childhood family friends. It’s such a sweet way to celebrate this Labor Day weekend and for good reason, I could go for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice.

FLORALS + SUPPLIES

  • Cylinder vessel (8-9” opening)

  • 1” mesh chicken wire

  • Floral snips

  • Wooden skewers

  • 6 stems of golden yellow dahlias

  • 2 orange pin cushion protea

  • 1 bunch of orange hanging amaranthus

  • 25 stems of ‘creola’ pink antique carnations

  • 25 stems of ‘phoenix’ peach garden roses

  • 12 stems of ‘nina’ orange roses

  • 1 bunch of bush ivy

  • 7-8 medium navel oranges

STEPS

  1. Snip sections of chicken wire and mold the wire to fill the vessel and create the shape above the vessel.

  2. Fill the vessel with enough water so that all stems placed within the arrangement will be submerged.

  3. Start with the stems of bush ivy to create a greenery base. The outline of these greens will start to build the shape of the arrangement.

  4. Layer in the hanging amaranthus to determine the best locations for drape. I like to place them higher up in the arrangement to add texture and softness. Amaranthus tend to have long stems, so you have flexibility to place them high.

  5. Add in the peach garden roses and pink antique carnations to fill the body of the arrangement.

  6. Place the yellow dahlias strategically so they have a strong viewpoint.

  7. Incorporate the orange roses in small sectioned clusters. The bold color of these dark red-orange blooms add a beautiful depth to the composition of the arrangement.

  8. Place the orange pin cushions so they are featured in the arrangement.

  9. Push wooden skewers through the navel oranges and position them throughout the arrangement where the skewers will be hidden from view. The chicken wire structure will provide support for the navel oranges to stay in place.

  10. Top off the vessel with water and spritz the arrangement with water to help hydrate the petals.
