Sartorial Host’s Smoky Julep
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! In honor of the special day, I wanted to create a special cocktail that fits the bill. As the Texas heat is settling in, this Smoky Julep is the perfect cocktail that balances cool and refreshing and depth of flavor. An elevated spin on the mint julep, this Smoky Julep brings notes of umami smokiness with the special smoky brown sugar simple syrup and an extra pinch of Woodfire salt. Filled to the brim with fresh mint leaves and pebble ice, this Smoky Julep is sure to satisfy all the bourbon-drinking dads on a hot summer day like today!

SMOKY JULEP
ingredients + TOOLS
4-5 fresh mint leaves
Pinch of Woodfire Salt
2 oz bourbon whiskey
1 oz Smoky Brown Sugar Simple Syrup, recipe below
Cotton twine
3-4 sprigs fresh mint
Brûlée torch
Pebble ice
Lowball glass
Cocktail straw
STEPS
In a lowball glass, lightly muddle mint leaves and salt.
Add whiskey and simple syrup to the glass.
Using the cotton twine that has been soaked in water, tie together the sprigs of mint to create a mint bundle.
Using the torch, lightly burn the lower half of the mint bundle. Stir the cocktail together using the mint bundle.
Fill the glass with pebble ice and serve with a cocktail straw.
SMOKY BROWN SUGAR SIMPLE SYRUP
1 cup water
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 tsp Woodfire Salt
In a small saucepan, heat water, sugar, and salt until low simmer and the sugar has fully dissolved. Remove from heat and let it cool to room temp. (Simple syrup can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to a week.)
